Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Without mentioning smartphones or social media, what societal changes have you noticed over the course of your lifetime?
151·7 months agoNo one admits when they don’t know something. The mentality of, fake it until you make it, casts ignorance as some sort of failure to be ridiculed. As a result we have politicians and laymen believing they can do something or know better than experts on a specific topic.
The other is the complete lack of humility or embarrassment when fucking up. People will just stream or post their most idiotic ideas to get ‘views,’ even if it makes them look terrible. This idea where you need to live-stream your entire life baffles me. Not sure if this falls under the tech and social media restriction of this post.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•people keep talking about how "em dashes" are evidence of ai. i use them all the time. am i a computer now?
21·7 months agoDon’t feel bad. Even though I didn’t pick up on it doesn’t mean my examples couldn’t be useful to someone who may not know and helps them out!
If I could ask, how did you pick your Lemmy name? Does it mean something?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•people keep talking about how "em dashes" are evidence of ai. i use them all the time. am i a computer now?
2·7 months agoWell, they’re is a contraction of they are, which is why you know it’s the correct one to use if you can replace they’re with they are and the sentence still makes sense. The word their is possessive so if you’re talking about someone or even something possessing something else, you would use their. There is in reference to something or somewhere else.
I can’t remember the specific rules I was taught in school, but I still know the correct usage many years later.
There was a snake over there, they’re trying to find it now, cause it isn’t native and none of our friends say it is their snake!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How has standing or standing-sitting vs sitting while working affected your life?
2·7 months agoWhen my job was retail, and I was standing a lot, I bought a brand of footwear called Shoes for Crews. Most comfortable shoes I ever contributed to capitalism while wearing!

2·7 months agoAlso, don’t lock your knees. Those with prior military service knows what’s up, but it can also have some nasty repercussions!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How has standing or standing-sitting vs sitting while working affected your life?
2·7 months agoA walking treadmill has been great at home for me. Just don’t use one while playing FPS games. You know how we like to lean with controllers when doing something extreme in game, like leaning over helps eek a little more from the maneuver? Yeah, that happens when walking and gunning. Let me tell you how instantly aware of your misstep you are when that happens!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How has standing or standing-sitting vs sitting while working affected your life?
1·7 months agoA vertical mouse really helped me at home with my wrists. I was concerned it would negatively affect gaming, and FPS specifically. While there was a bit of muscle memory retraining the first few sessions of play, it seemed to improve my performance. Bonus, I’d say, since long play sessions would usually lead to slight wrist pain before.
Where it didn’t improve performance was with my wife. Or so she says!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What shows/movies are absurdly stupid but fun to watch with friends?
3·8 months agoKiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang
Hilariously dry comedy with the late Val Kilmore as a sassy gay man. Every other movie I wanted to suggest was already posted here. These are all great choices!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What cover song just takes you to Universe B compared to the original?
1·8 months agoRight? I’m not normally a screamo fan, but I tend to overlook that when there’s some real emotion in a song. Their other stuff is pretty amazing, also. Some of my favorites are The Drug In Me is Reimagined, Voices in My Head, Popular Monster, and I’m Not a Vampire.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What cover song just takes you to Universe B compared to the original?
1·8 months agoThat would be correct. I was in junior high or high school when Last Resort by Papa Roach was released. This version is so much more emotional, and given the lyrics, it fits!

Same. For the longest time I was made to believe that crying in front of people was weak. Especially, when those tears came from entertainment. Then I watched Schindler’s List and bawled like a fucking baby at the end when…
Tap for spoiler
Schindler starts pointing out all the possessions he still had, which he could have bartered to save more Jews and the overwhelming support from the ones he did save comforting him.
It fundamentally changed who I was and what I was willing to show emotion for, especially empathy. I found that any movie based on actual events, that ended tragically, would illicit a similar response.
It was only after years of therapy and the support of wonderful people in my life that I learned to feel that deeply for any media with resonating characters. Elon said empathy is a human weakness, but he’s never been so wrong. It’s the only thing that binds us together.
