X11: even regardless of whatever non-Linux takes the forker holds, forking X11 seems to be such a bad idea. The X11→Wayland migration is being painful, and now we see the light at the end of the tunnel might as well improve Wayland instead. Cue to the next piece of news (Ubuntu and Manjaro ditching X11).

I wonder if Denmark ditching Microsoft is directly related to Schleswig-Holstein doing it. Specially given they’re neighbours.

Google ditching Android: may I be honest? I think smartphones are wrong the grounds up. They should be more like miniature PCs; in this case, meaning “if you’re able to run an OS in a PC, you should be able to run it in a phone, and vice versa”. But of course hardware vendors give no fucks, right? PC-isation of smartphones means people replacing parts too, and noooo, you can’t have people not ditching their whole phone after few years!

If I got it right, this is like Synaptic but across multiple package managers, right? It sounds useful, I’m going to give it a try.

EDIT: in Linux Mint, I couldn’t install it through the command sudo pip3 install bauh; I think the system is throwing a hissy fit for trying to install stuff outside a sandboxed environment. Downloading the AppImage works fine.

It looks off in Cinnamon, as it relies on the Qt styles installed. It works great though - specially for AppImage and Flatpak applications.

I wish it had a deborphan-like filter, allowing you to see only packages that do not depend on other packages. That would be a godsend for system cleaning.

I’m glad to see GoboLinux resurrected. I didn’t use it much, but I really like to see distros doing different stuff, like questioning even the need for the standard file hierarchy.

In the worst hypothesis, if tmsu doesn’t work for your needs, then @[email protected]’s idea (parallel directory tree with symlinks) sounds solid. Or even flattening the directory tree that you already use, like:

This way if you want to find e.g. all dirs with TA, you just Ctrl+F “TA activities” and it’ll show you both “./2024.2 TA activities” and “./2025.1 TA activities”.

I had a similar problem and I solved it through a tagging tool, tmsu The tool works through the terminal but it has a virtual file system, so you can access your files from a GUI file manager. I recommend you to check it out, it might solve your problem.

At least Mint has an OEM install; on the first boot after installing the system, it asks you to create a user (plus language, layout etc.). I never used it though, but I expect other distros to have a similar feature.

My blocklist is 30~40 users long. [For reference, my blocklist in Reddit reached 400 or so.]

To keep it short, I typically block people who, egregious or consistently:

• show lack of reasoning, even if I agree with the conclusion
• misrepresent what others say
• take things off context to judge them, even if I agree with the judgement
• vomit lots of “hard” certainty on things that they cannot reasonably know (e.g. the others’ emotional states over the internet)
• engage in passive aggressiveness (note that I tolerate some clear hostility, just not pass-aggro)
• show clear signs of sealioning (e.g. “I don’t understand” + misrepresentation of what someone else said)
• tell others shit like “trust me” = “I expect you to be a gullible piece of rubbish”

Note that “egregious or consistently” are key words here. Like, I’m not going out of my way to block someone out of a brainfart; this is not some sort of petty revenge, it’s just removing from my sight people who I believe to not contribute with my overall Lemmy experience. I also don’t take issue when people block me, for whatever reason they might have.
