i do, all the time. there was a time where everyone was putting up personal websites and doing basic html. the entire geocities wave is proof of that. it was already decentralised.
the main thing is that, while gopher was designed under a set of limitations, gemini is designed off of a set of opinions. actively breaking backward compatibility is one of them i do not agree with.
of course it doesn’t need to sell to anyone. people working on it presumably like it. the difference is that gopher predates the web, so its sales pitch matched that of the web.
gemini’s sales pitch is that it’s a simplified version of the web, which i can respect, but their choice of not making it a subset of a standard means that it fails to be a viable alternative to the web, because that standard is so ubiquitous.
still not sold on gemini. the project has sort of a holier-than-thou smell to it, striving for the sort of technological purity that makes it unattractive to use. i would still choose gopher.

i can perfectly imitate the “adult voice” from Peanuts with just my mouth.
dendrite seems to be written in go nowadays, which i did not expect.
also, what spurred this political tirade? i just sat down!
i thought dendrite was the new hotness?
the backend is no longer fully open source
can you expand on this? never heard it before.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Atheists of Lemmy, what are your thoughts on the Islamic Dilemma?English
25·6 months agothis video is from an organisation whose stated goal is to convert muslims to christianity.
in fact, i could not find any secular sources for this so called dilemma, only texts for christians who wish to convert muslims. since there are no objective descriptions of the problem, and no incentive to be objective, there is no way to reason about it on equal footing.
it’s not a valid dilemma because it’s blatantly propaganda.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why did gandhi ask britain to seek peace with nazi germany?English
4·6 months agoyeah thats yucky, but idk if was really hush-hush considering he wrote it down himself for publishing.
he was unquestionably racist and sexist through a modern lens but the question with this stuff is how it contrasts with the world around the person.
i always point to Hergé, whose early works were super racist by today’s standard because they followed the style at the time. not using the stereotypes at that point would have made eg Tintin in the Congo harder to read for contemporary audiences due to the shared cultural understanding. later books completely changed in tone as the century progressed.

i played the shit out of that. still have the deluxe “saga” edition complete in box.
