You should file a police report or a report at IdentityTheft.gov. Give as many details as you can, but also recognize as another commenter mentioned that the names you’re seeing are probably also stolen identities. This almost certainly won’t result in any real action unless an investigator can tie enough cases together to identify a suspect. The main reason to do this is you can then go to the credit reporting agencies and place a fraud alert on your records, which should require anyone opening a credit account for you to do extra verification that you’re actually requesting it. If you don’t have a formal report that request only stays active for 1 year but with a formal report they’ll keep it active for 7 years, or at least that was the case a few years ago. You should also freeze your credit report if you haven’t already, which will make it inaccessible to anyone who would want to read it, such as a potential lender. It does become a slight pain to unfreeze it anytime you’re actually applying for credit, but makes it extremely difficult for anyone else to successfully apply for credit in your name.

Depending on the phone and keyboard, I actually find it easier to use em and en dashes on mobile instead of the computer. Usually on mobile I can just hit the button for numbers/symbols and long-press the hyphen-minus, then select the appropriate alternate dash. Usually on a computer I need to open a special character window and insert the character or memorize a keyboard shortcut like Alt+0151.

If you’re okay with writing a little HTML and just don’t want to deal with writing/designing the CSS, I recently found out about HTML5 UP, which has a bunch of Creative Commons Attribution 3.0-licensed templates. It’s fairly straightforward to modify the content if you understand the HTML, and then you can host it for free as a static page at any number of places like GitHub Pages or Cloudflare Pages.

If you don’t want to have the CC-By attribution on the webpage, the designer also offers a service called Pixelarity with the same templates and more for a $19/quarter non-renewing subscription. You can continue using the templates even after the subscription expires and can keep making new sites with any template you already downloaded, you just don’t get any updates or tech support when the subscription expires. Upload to one of those free static hosts and it’s dramatically cheaper than Ghost or WordPress, and probably less work than a static site generator for something that’s not changing often.

It’s not just Facebook, I’ve seen it a lot in ads on mobile games and a lot of them look like they’re made for social, Tik Tok and similar. A lot of them claim to be going out of business, and the one that really makes me laugh is the one that’s obviously an AI-generated old man talking about having to shut down his decades-old business making hand-crafted leather goods. If the leather goods they sell are hand-crafted I’m sure it’s coming from a sweatshop in China or somewhere even cheaper, not an artisanal workshop from a single craftsman.

They’re only looking for $250,000. That seems like it should be achievable. Really, a handful of corporate sponsorships from big companies, where $50,000 is almost nothing, could be all they need. Or 50,000 people giving $5 once a year.

Early 40s male, a lot of the time I feel like a kid who’s tricked people into believing I’m an adult. Then I spend time with my kid and their friends, all finishing high school and looking at universities or about to start, and I realize I’m definitely not a kid anymore. That makes me feel a little old. I have more random aches, pains, and creaking noises, but I wouldn’t say I’m old yet. I’m older than I was and a little wiser, but not old or wise.

I don’t like how much gray is in my beard, though.

I seem to recall in the past Microsoft pressured manufacturers to not sell computers without an operating system, arguing that unscrupulous consumers would install pirated copies of Windows on them. A ridiculous argument, but it was the excuse they used.

I still have a Facebook account. I mostly just check once a day to look at my Memories. I had already largely stopped using it because they stopped showing me things from my friends or pages I follow. Typically it would be one post at the top of the feed from someone or something I follow, then a bunch of “suggested” content, not what I want to see. I made my account in February 2005, back when you had to be a college student at a university Facebook supported to get an account. Over the years I had several hundred friends, although I got more selective as I got older and weeded out people on my list and added a lot fewer of the people I met. All that to say, I don’t think there was a lack of content available to show me, they just don’t want to show me what my friends and family are doing.

One of my goals for this year is to set up my own Friendica instance for myself and maybe a few close family members. I’d like to try to figure out a way to take a Facebook data export and import it into Friendica. It looks like there’s no direct way, but maybe an indirect way by importing the Facebook data to WordPress, then importing the WordPress data to Friendica.
