I’m as fascinated by those shuttle comparisons as anything else!

On the face of it, I wouldn’t have guessed that the space shuttle’s power output was measured in gigawatts, nor that the space shuttle’s output is on the same scale as an entire country’s steam power output (in 1896, sure… but still!)

One thing I’ve noticed in discussing dreams with my wife is that experiencing the dream first-hand with all the context, emotions, and sense of having “been there” goes a long way toward making a dream feel more realistic or believable.

There have been many times where I’m explaining a dream that felt (and still feel) totally plausible and coherent, but in trying to describe it to someone else, I realize just how unrealistic certain aspects are. Its like trying to explain the plot of an absurdist comedy or something like that.

There’s probably an allegory in there for individual perception and lived experiences vs objective reality, but I’m not feeling quite articulate enough to type it out… 🙃

I used to deliver for papa johns many moons ago. We had one guy who ordered the same thing every Saturday afternoon at about 4pm. I forget the exact details… it was something normal like a pepperoni & mushroom, but then add literally 5x extra anchovies on the entire thing. A typical large was about $12 in those days, and his pizza would be north of $25.

I hated getting that run because my car would smell like fish oil into the next day, but the dude tipped well so it was cool.

The dumbest thought I ever had while high was that I convinced myself I had two brains, and that one brain could predict the thoughts of the other brain before it thought them.

That’s hilarious! Honestly, I rather enjoy that sensation of temporarily being… not stupid… but willing to uncritically entertain stupid ideas.

It sounds super obvious, but i never thought to cook hasbrowns in the bacon grease… Mostly because I’m fully converted to making bacon in the oven these days.

Definitely going to give this a whirl next time we’re doing breakfast.

Beginner here (to Linux and networking anyways), running Unraid for about 18 months now. Fully agree, it’s been great for actually getting up and doing useful things quickly and relatively pain free.

Eventually I would like to try working backwards and getting things running on a more “traditional” server environment, but Unraid has been a great learning tool for me personally.

It’s like… Maybe some folks learned to overhaul an engine before they got their driver’s license, but lots of people just need to a car to get to work and back today, and they can learn to change their oil and do a brake job when the time comes.

I’ve tried explaining this concept to people in my life who insist on considering context when deciding whether to use their turn signal. But about half of them seem stuck on this idea that moving their fingers a few inches is a task that justifies a cost-benefit analysis each time.

Hell, I’ll go against the grain here and say that if my wife wanted to watch porn featuring me, some kind of AI or otherwise manipulated imagery is the only way that’s practically going to happen, and I’d have no issues indulging her in principle.

The main sticking point would be the feasibility of generating that content without feeding my photos to some 3rd party, and more importantly making sure that imagery never leaks outside of her direct personal and private possession.

I’d very much prefer to give consent, but if she were to do it on her own, my main issues would again be around the point above. Otherwise I wouldn’t feel much different than if she told me she got off while imagining me on her minds eye. And the same types of caveats would apply: Me with some anonymous 3rd party? Whatever floats her boat. Me with a specific person, or worse yet, someone we know? That’s when it starts to cross a line.

My wife went through something similar. Took until she was in her 30s and we were pursuing IVF for someone to take her seriously and actually do the investigation to realize she had crazy scarring from endometriosis causing all kinds of issues.

It’s insane to me how much the modern medical community seems to normalize or straight up ignore this shit, like you said.

I realize we could have pushed harder, but when multiple doctors tell you “yeah, some women just experience periods differently, here’s 500mg Naproxen to help you through” you tend to believe it.

Using different cutlery based off of meal size/how long you want to savor something (ex: You like ice cream, so you may eat it with a smaller spoon so it lasts longer.).

I don’t do this all the time, but definitely with desserts and sweets. Both from the perspective of being able to savor it longer, and also for portion control.

I dont think i have a single playlist set up, and almost exclusivly listen to albums cover to cover. All I really want is for a service to occasionally say “Hey you spent 60 hours last month listening to these 3 bands… check out these guys if you want something fresh with a similar vibe”

Spotify did a semi decent job of that, and it’s how I’ve discovered a few new bands, but paying $18/mo just to discover a few per year is not a great value proposition. I’d rather torrent a random album and then pick up some merch or concert tickets if I end up liking them.

I have not personally got to the point of trying any yet, but I have heard several times about plugins for Jellyfin that add discoverability and recommendation features.

You still have the issue of actually tracking down the music, which Jellyseer or similar can help with. But if one of those plug-ins were to interface with Spotify or YouTube for preview purposes, that would be pretty slick!
