Yeah, I’ve been trying to learn this sentiment a bit more.
Thousands of us feel overwhelmed looking at and responding to violence. Others are super focused on their recovery work to help the world, and thus end up viewing the arrest of one of their (50) colleagues as a “disturbing inconvenience”.
The world isn’t one single needle that’s either getting worse or better.
Honestly I like its message too. If nobody told stories about crazy homicidal hillbillies, none of the movie would’ve happened.
From what I know, most of the effort goes to moderation - both when posting text, and video. We only get to see the moderated content, so we don’t know how much horrible shit there is.
One of the biggest ones in mystery is “Why didn’t X simply Y”
They can literally just be stupid. Or ego driven. Etc.
There’s a great series of mystery games where the final villain even admits this exactly. He found evidence of a murder plot against the sister of his dead girlfriend, and instead of reporting it or detaining those involved, he let it almost happen. It was literally all so he could feel like a hero saving them at the last second, and he says as much directly.
What really sucks is how many times this conversation has started, only for the trans person to (very logically and understandably) react internally with “Ohhh boy, here we go, another one of these backwards bigots. I’m just going to yell to make myself feel better.”
Then the ignorant individual feels attacked, gets defensive, and feels satisfied in their belief that trans people are hysterical or something.
I don’t even blame anyone so much for that. Being patient with every single transphobe just in case they’re a reasonable person takes far more energy than I have.
It’s common to think of libraries as Public Book Rental, but recently most have expanded their services quite a lot.
Libraries were admittedly the reason I started the thread but I’m also curious what other things will be mentioned.
I think at some point in time, I might have been a little bit more susceptible to this. I’ve had a very hard time getting a girlfriend, in part because of a terrible dating sphere - ironically, very much caused by rapists like Andrew Tate. So really, the men frustrated by lack of attention should be blaming Andrew Tate, not worshipping him, but the same situation is true for, say, businesses suffering from government regulation joining lobbying groups, etc.
Loneliness combined with the requisite image of male strength kind of forces people to either admit to being a loser, or “taking charge” in a way that demonizes the rest of the world. Being turned down repeatedly denies them a lot of power, so they’re eager to steal some back in any way they can, even if it’s for a cause that doesn’t actually help them.
As for why I never fell in there; I had good parents, and a financial cushion. If I was always starved for cash, chances are mental stress like that might’ve actually pushed me into very poor choices.
I call this Shadow the Hedgehog darkness. When something wants to look dark and mature from the outset, but it’s really a form of childishness. Same appearance takes effect for a lot of “dark” anime, where people are routinely betraying and causing pain, and “At its heart most of humanity just wants chaos” blah blah.
I do think there’s a lot of horrible stuff in the world, but it’s usually far more banal than anything these edgelords envision. When put face to face, people usually want to be kind to each other. But we’re not put face-to-face often enough.
The whole problem is, there are huge sects of people that refuse to stay out of each other’s way.
They wanted to invade Canada, Mexico, and Greenland. Then they realized first they needed to invade the blue states - the ones that believe in rule of law. The ones that have immigrants and get along with them.
It’s the same type of expansionists, and their loyal poor underlings, present in Russia and in Israel.
