I use Firefox and Librewolf.

I’ve used Firefox for a long tine, and I strongly favour it as the only true independent browser engine left. Everything else is under Google or Apples control, and many of the various chrome forks are commercial and compromised. I dont trust Brave or Vivaldi in terms of privacy. And google has severely limited privacy options in chromium based browsers with its recent changes.

Mozilla is far from perfect and I’m disturbed by some of its actions but it remains the least bad option. Librewolf adds a layer of privacy and separation that I like although its not my main browser. I main Firefox with lots of privacy extensions.

I do have chromiun and chromium ungoogled installed and exclusively for streaming video. Not because Firefox isn’t capable but because I have loads of extensions in Firefox so its easier just to contain all my subscribed streaming services in its own browser and not have to faff with DRM or ad block issues. I watch YouTube in Firefox, but use Chromium to watch BBC, Channel 4, and Netflix (when I had it). I use Jellyfin media player to stream my own content.

I’m not against AI itself—it’s the hype and misinformation that frustrate me. LLMs aren’t true AI - or not AGI as the meaning of AI has drifted - but they’ve been branded that way to fuel tech and stock market bubbles. While LLMs can be useful, they’re still early-stage software, causing harm through misinformation and widespread copyright issues. They’re being misapplied to tasks like search, leading to poor results and damaging the reputation of AI.

Real AI lies in advanced neural networks, which are still a long way off. I wish tech companies would stop misleading the public, but the bubble will burst eventually—though not before doing considerable harm.

I use OpenSuSe on my desktop and laptop, and Nobara on my HTPC. Rasberry Pi OS on the RPi5.

My desktop is my own build, with a ryzen 7 and 3070 gpu, 64gb ram.

Aside from my phone, I use my HTPC the most, Desktop second (including often to stream games to the HTPC), and the larger boox ereader. Don’t use the laptop unless traveling and even then don’t always bother to take it; to the point I’ve decided not to replace it despite its age until it dies. I do take the tablet when travelling but most of the time its unused.

The HTPC I use to game, stream online and home libraries, and browse the internet. Its largely replaced my steamdeck, allowed me to game on my desktop PC from my sofa and largely made my Google TV device redundant.

Second for The Rest is History. Its on all major podcast platforms and on YouTube. It has two hosts who take it in turns to talk about a topic while the other asks questions. Its full of gentle banter, and light humour but deleves in depth into topics. Some topics are covered in a single episode, others in depth in multi part series.

Its got a huge backlog of episodes, clearly labeled by topic and covers the full breadth of history. The two hosts are British but it covers global history, and it doesnt have biases. It does a “warts and all” approach to any topic.

Strongly recommend it.

As far as I can see the 3rd gen model is less versatile than the 1st and 2nd, because its so locked down and has very limited storage. Its more like an iPhone than a PC.

Jail breaking means “unlocking” the restrictions apple put on the is on the device so you can do more with it.

But this project is last updated in 2021 and from the looks of it online, fundamentally there isn’t much more that can be done. Jail breaking it would be a first step to do anything with it if you want to experiment.

Kodi would certainly give it a new lease of life but that still keeps it as a media consumption device. Kodi is an open source media tool that has a good TV friendly interface, and a huge range of plugins for streaming video and audio (legally but also illegally; kodi itself is perfectly legit and legal but there are plenty of plugins that essentially allow media piracy). You could then sell it on eBay if its working? Someone might want it even if only for cheap?

Other than that, recycle it? If your local refuse centre doesnt recycle it some companies might?

Travel Agents. I remember growing up they were all over the place and people had to go to them to book flights and hotels or buy package holidays.

They’re all but gone now. I’m vaguely aware there may still be some specialist ones left catering to elderly boomers?

Its an entire business and career path thats completely gone, replaced by websites and at a push generic call centres (some people still book over the phone I guess?)

I’m in the UK, and am paying £32 ($41) a month for 1Gbps symmetric fibre to the home.

Edit: worth adding my sibling is paying £36 a month for 1gbps down/100mbps up from the main network in the UK, Openreach (they run the old poles and other companies run services on their network). Thats probably the more common fibre package at the moment.

I’m on a newer independent network, and there are other companies building out independent telephone pole networks in the UK.

I used to be on Virgin cable and was paying £56 a month for 512mbps down, 100mbps up.

As long as they’re both of an age to consent legally, then yes, absolutely. Not sure what jurisdiction you’re in but 16 is age of consent in most places, and they’re going to do it if they want to do it. It’s far better to treat them like adults, let them be somewhere safe, and teach them that they should not feel shameful or fearful about that part of them. If the age of consent where you are is 18, or Tiffany is not legally of age, then the situation would be quite different and difficult but would have to be no.

That your son is able to be so honest and comfortable with you, and Tiffany with her parents (hopefully!) is a credit to you all. This is an opportunity to encourage him to practice safe sex and also that sex as part of a healthy relationship like this is healthy and valuable in itself (as opposed to sneaking around, and him not able or even bothered to provide a safe space for his girlfriend). It’s worth encouraging this attitude that to do this they should be somewhere safe, and comfortable, such as his room in your home. It will also ensure a much better experience for both of them should it be a first time (whether overall or just together).

I would just consider confirming that Tiffany’s parents are aware of this and comfortable with this; especially as at 17 are in a grey area socially between being legally adults in many areas but not others. EDIT: As someone else suggests, ask Tiffany to get her parents to call you - so that the ball is in her court.

I would also even consider being out until late so they can have some privacy. I would also set some ground rules such as no drinking or drugs in exchange for this, and no one else in the house while you’re out. I totally accept that may not instinctively sit well with you to be out but they’re both at the cusp of adulthood and total autonomy (literally months away if your son is 17) and already have autonomy in this decision (unless you’re in one of the few places where the age of consent is 18).

This sort of treatment, respect and trust is something your son will remember for the rest of his life.

Its something of a myth but not completely.

For women, if the hymen is still intact it can tear during the first time having penetrative sex and that can be painful plus accompanied by blood. However it is a myth that the hymen is intact in all virgins and that the first time is painful for all women.

For men, the first time penetrating someone can rarely be painful too if they have not retracted their foreskin much before or it is tight. Some men don’t realise they can retract their foreskin fully when masturbating for example, and may not be told by anyone (particularly is homes that may by uptight or even puritanical about sex education). So it does genuinely happen that people find out when they first have sex. For most men the foreskin will stretch a bit over time and tightness or pain will resolve but occasionally they need a circumcision.

Men with circumcisions may also experience pain the first time if theyve has a bad circumcision and the scar is restricting them or being pulled on during penetration. Again that usually settles but very rarely may need surgery.

Meanwhile for anal penetration, the first time is often painful largely due to inexperience. People are not used to relaxing the anus, or are nervous and tighten it. Also if they have a bad partner they may be too aggressive which can be very painful, or they may not use enough lube.

So yes the first time can be painful, but is a myth that it must be painful or is always painful. Pain can be avoided . Persistent pain every time sex is had may be due to poor technique but may also warrant a medical check up - for either gender/sex.

The reality is what youre asking for is very complex - you’re asking for lagless streaming for a desktop. That is running a GUI on remote hardware, and then streaming that video to another computer with low latency so you have no perception of lag in moving the mouseor interaction, and continuous streaming of desktop updates.

There are lots of factors at play that can make it a poor experience.

You can have what you want if:

• The server you SSH in to has the resources to run X well
• The server you SSH in to has the hardware to be able to then convert that to video (with some tricks) and stream it
• The internet connection between you and the remote server is stable and high enough bandwidth to stream the desktop
• the internet connection between you and the remote desktop is low latency.

Its very hard to achieve all those things even when youre creating machines that are dedicated for remote desktop streaming. I have done that in my work with Windows devices and to get good quality streaming we needed dedicated hardware, dedicated software and high quality internet. And even then some of our users had bad experiences.

Most remote servers are definitely not set up to provide what you want. Dedicated software for the task will help as there are lits of tricks that they apply to make a streaming desktop appear latency free versus simpler solutions that just stream the actual desktop.

VNC is not a good solution - its basically just taking screenshots and streaming those to you. It works with fast devices on a local network, but is very limited in your use.

If you really want to solve this look at software optimised for low latency uses such as gaming. For example Moonlight/Sunshine are for game streaming but work with desktops. They are designed to be low latency high quality. But to achieve that you need the video hardware on your server, and the good low latency stable internet connection.

Real world high quality desktop streaming also needs good graphics hardware and optimised tools. It can be achieved with open source software but you need the hardware to to do the heavy lifting.
