Thanks, I was wondering who the other guys were. Torvalds in the former enemy’s lair. He’s the winner in this pic.
archive.today and archive.ph (also .is, .md, .fo, .li, .vn) could be Russian assets.

Linux@programming.dev•Best Free and Open Source Alternatives to Microsoft Process Explorer
2·6 months agoWhy do we post alternatives for Windows applications on Windows, on a Linux community?
The article lists:
htop bpytop bottom btop++ glancesApparently all those work on Windows as well? Because otherwise I don’t see the point.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•The hidden cost of self-hostingEnglish
9·6 months agoThis is what I do. I keep the old ones around for a while, and every time I realize that I’m not missing anything, and delete them.
Worst case, I’ll have to root around in my backups. But it has never happened wrt browser bookmarks.

Linux@programming.dev•Must fight temptation to buy an overpriced raspberry pi
291·6 months ago‼️
I once did some research & measurements about power consumption; my takeaway was that as soon as the screen is off any ol’ laptop (with the charger constantly attached) consumes pretty much the same amount of energy as a RasPi with identical storage attached.
I used a 2008 hp consumer laptop as a server between 2015 and 2021.

Linux@programming.dev•Xlibre, a new fork of the X.org X11 server, announced
6·6 months agoDamn. As a German! That’s shameful. And of course utterly nuts.
I found this question on reddit with a really good reply, if someone’s interested:
https://web.archive.org/web/20230605123206/https://old.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/58doy0/ive_seen_a_number_of_conspiracy_theorists_and/Sadly, Weigelt does not stand alone in the Linux community. I used to frequent one of the oldest and largest Linux forums, and there were all sorts of crazies. But more importantly, the general tone was more conservative than you’d think. Or rather Libertarian.

And that article does not inspire me to delve deeper into the topic.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•A bit of my selfhost journey [that no one asked about]English
1·6 months agoI am running things locally.
Sorry, I missed that. It invalidates part of my comment.
I cannot get an ssl cert for my local network stuff
You can make a self-signed cert. If your mobile app does not have an option to accept it (“ignore SSL errors”) then it won’t work, maybe there’s an alternative?
caldav does not support recurring stuff on the todo … It seems that they all internally juggle how recurring stuff happens
CalDAV is a protocol, which remains the same. The server has little to do with how apps handle things. I have no experience with tasks, but under the hood it’s just another calendar and does not treat recurring events differently. I’m guessing these limitations/inconsistencies are app specific.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•A bit of my selfhost journey [that no one asked about]English
21·6 months agoSo your server is running NextCloud? I hope you have it locked down tight, with all it’s web ui access points.
I started out with by doing my own calendar.
Wasn’t the first thing for me, but the most consistent over time. Calendar and Contacts, synced between phone and laptop. I used first DaviCal, now Radicale.
The next move I did was to bring my todo list over.
AFAIK these are just CalDAV calendars labeled todo; all you need is a different client app, the server software is the same.
Only downsides is that it is a bit more strict (particularly on the mobile app) about an ssl cert.
Can you explain? Doing things encrypted by default is extremely important.

Linux@programming.dev•Ubuntu Devs Debate Splitting Linux Firmware to Reduce Size
2·6 months agoYeah I also feel that the splitting is already happening, or has been the case for the longest time. I wonder what’s so different about Ubuntu in that respect.

Linux@programming.dev•Ubuntu Devs Debate Splitting Linux Firmware to Reduce Size
7·6 months agoThere’s no linux-firmware package on Debian. I guess that’s one of the major changes that makes Ubuntu different from Debian, under the hood.
Anyhow, on Debian:
- firmware-linux: Meta package, depends on:
- firmware-linux-free (that one really is a sammelsurium)
- firmware-linux-nonfree: Meta package, depends on:
- firmware-misc-nonfree (big one, could well be made into a meta package depending on vendor-specific packages)
- firmware-amd-graphics (another big one)
- firmware-linux: Meta package, depends on:

There used to be a mismatch between the spec and Google’s implementation of it.

34·6 months agoA simple
whois(querying a public database) points to Prague (CZ) - and reveals the name & address of one person. Of course that most likely isn’t his personal address, the guy could still live in the USA. And his last name indeed does not sound very czech, could be Russian, but I cannot be sure. Somebody in the fediverse claimed that he’s a Russian asset but I haven’t seen anything that would support that claim, apart from the obvious.whoisarchive.is: Denis Petrov, Praguearchive.today: tucows.com and lots of REDACTEDarchive.md: almost no info at allarchive.ph: This TLD has no whois server
It’s just their way of saying
“You need to keep your bloated system updated, which will require you to buy new hardware every few years. Anything else is old.”
Ah, the arrogance of youth. I remember it well myself.
