The feeling you’re talking about pretty much always happens when you find a small community. Like when you move to a small town and life just somehow feels more personal. Those are still around, they just aren’t well known (but they never really were). I mean it’s like there are a lot of very large cities today but small towns are still there too.

I have no doubt software will achieve general intelligence, but I think the point where it does will be hard to define. Software can already outdo humans at lots of specific reasoning tasks where the problems are well defined. But how do you measure the generality of problems, so you can say last week our AI wasn’t general enough to call it AGI, but now it is?

I never tried to rotate individual pages or do special headers, but I don’t know - it had many features I didn’t use.

I’m surprised how many people don’t know about a Linux utility called “fuck”. When you make a mistake on the command line and get an error, you just type “fuck” and it looks at what happened and suggests a fix. If this looks correct - and it almost always is - you just hit Enter and it types that in for you. Best thing ever!

ClickBook - dunno if it’s even available anymore, but like 20 years ago it was either a standalone or add-on that formatted Word docs for printing. I think it cost $35. You could lay out say a tri-fold brochure or a folded-in-half and stapled booklet and it would rotate, combine and print the pages in the correct order. My wife and I used it endlessly to produce publications for our kids’ school. If your printer could only print on one side, there was a quick setup procedure that would would figure out how you should rotate or flip the stack of pages to do the second side. I haven’t used Word in years so for all I know it might have these capabilities natively now, but in its time ClickBook was probably the most worth-it program I ever bought.

Quick computation for Seattle, powering a typical laptop consuming 20W to run say an IoT server, 24/7 at 14 cents/kwh would cost about $25/year. A Pi 4 would be about 1/10th of that.

You can control nerf turrets as-is. My dev manager wrote a script to read the build mail and make his nerf turret shoot a volley of darts into the cubicle of whoever broke the build. And that was 15 years ago.

This reminds me of a job where my office buddy and I used to shoot rubber bands, paperclips, little wads of paper etc. at each other over the partition between our desks, or bank them off the wall. There was this guy Dave from another floor, who occasionally stopped in with a question for one of us, and I swear to god every time he came in was right when we were screwing around like that or laughing immediately afterwards. Every. Single. Time. Once while we were exchanging fire I even said something like, “Time for Dave to show up,” and like 2 seconds later he walked in. We both busted up laughing. Dave developed a srsly bad attitude about us because he didn’t think we ever did any work, but actually we were hella busy most of the time.

Because of the office layout at one of my jobs I developed exceptional skill at backhanding stuff into the trash bin diagonally behind me across the room. So when I made a home office I set it up the same way. People are always asking, “Why is your trash bin way over there?”

Sewing seems like a good hobby for anybody who likes to work with their hands. In my 20s my housemate let me borrow her sewing machine to put together a thinsulate jacket from a Frostline kit. It was a blast, but that was the last sewing I ever did.

English speaker here, it’s especially true of technical words because science draws on Latin so much for terminology. Also, after 2 years of Latin in high school and then studying Spanish in college, I found a lot of Spanish words easy to guess.
