Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is a movie that "looks like" it would suck, but actually is well written and acted and a good time?
7·6 months agoI watched it yesterday for the 2nd time (first time with my son). We laugh, we cried, we danced, we were shouting out loud and watched final battle standing on our feet. I unironically think it’s an excellent sport movie.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are commonly used idioms/metaphors that make no sense to anyone who knows about the topic they come from?
31·7 months agoIf that’s how it works for you, sure. But that’s not the point. I don’t claim that people learn one way or another, or Wich part is easy. The point is that a “steep learning curve” means something specific in psychology, and people use it to describe something different.

15·7 months agoIf I’m getting what you’re asking, “Jaws” is a famous example. Obsticle was: shark animatronic looks really bad. A solutiin: let’s not show it almost at all… which likely made a movie better.

A similar case was with scans from “mobile scanners”. Since those are used on patients to sick to be transported, their cases were disproportionaly “malicious”. Model was effectively optimozed to detected if scaner was stationary or mobile.
You are describing Google Ads right now. Algorithms are better and better in reaching to poeple that are already on the purchase patch. It’s like giving a restaurant flayers to people that are waiting for a weiter to show them a table.
Aren’t our ads amazing? Look, almost everyone who saw them made the purchase!
Analytics that ignores Goodharts law ruin everything. Movies, HR, Marketing (not much to ruin left, but you get the point), performancet review, recommendations…

<Tom holding a door open meme >
This is something that bothers me. Every time something like this come up, there is a non-trivial crowd of people saying things like “no shit. In the right circle, everyone known for a long time”. Often they come with specific anecdotes that should raise all the red flags.
Well, I had no idea. Not a clue. And it’s not like I was not interested. I was fallowing his work, social media… live in general. He was a very close friend with a woman who was vocal about being an abuse victim. Nobody told her?
Even in the power of hindsight, when I was looking for articles or comments from the past, there was not a lot. I found like one, “there is nothing he wouldn’t do to lure a goth girl” (paraphrased), that got zero traction.
If there were signs, why did we let that happen? What can I do, not to fall for something like this again?
